I love the light in Greece with its clear water straight to the bottom. In these watercolors I like to play with forms that mimic the abstract motion of the sea. The light within the water against the solid kaleidoscope of rocks inspires endless juxtapositions. I have returned to Milos many times because its vast history fires the imagination; the Kleptiko wind caves concealed pirates centuries ago, hence its root for “kleptomaniac”. On Milos there are Minoan, Mycenean and Roman ruins in addition to the familiar whitewashed Greek villages. The geology itself varies throughout the island, generating endless possibilities for an artist.
These watercolors relate to the works from an earlier period of recuperation, with similar strictures. I am currently unable to work on a heroic scale, but instead I paint on a small scale, allowing the forms to bloom as the water dries. My goals are lightness and ease. Why not enjoy each fleeting touch?
