Yosemite

I became fascinated with one rock in the Merced River as it flows out of Yosemite Valley.  Water rushes across this boulder in myriad patterns during the spring melt, revealing endless variations of color.  Paying close attention to artist materials, I found that Payne’s gray, for example, breaks down into purples and blues, tinted shades, and black.  Working with this monolithic rock provides a paradox: one rock reveals endless variations of form and liquid.  Scale becomes the subject because it is impossible to tell if the rock is smaller than a human or the size of El Capitan.
