4th and Brannan

I lived and painted in a large loft in the 1990’s.  (4th and Brannan). The neighborhood is defined by its lengthy blocks and warehouses which at that time were beginning to be developed into residential and artist lofts.    Lonely vistas lead to the towers of downtown San Francisco; at night the neighborhood becomes hostile for pedestrians.   Painting these bare parallelograms awakened my love of Edward Hopper’s spiritual loneliness and the abstract rigor of Diebenkorn.
